September deadline for recording cattle movements
By FWi staff
FARMERS must be recording cattle movements as well as births and deaths by 28 September this year, the Government has announced.
This is the date when the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) at Workington, Cumbria, is expected to be up and running.
Draft regulations in advance of the opening of the cattle database at Workington were released last week. Industry has until 17 June to respond to the proposals.
The draft regulations spell out exactly how and when to let the BCMS know of any movement, birth or death of animals. Farmers could face prosecution if they fail to comply with these requirements.
Details of the new system can be found on MAFFs internet site at http://www.maff.gov.uk/animalh/tracing/default.htm.
