Shake-up in UBMs farming presence

By Tom Allen-Stevens

E-COMMERCE trading site farmgate transact is to close, its parent company United Business Media has announced.

There are also unconfirmed reports that Farming News, the companys free weekly newspaper, is also to close, with the last issue due on 9 August.

In a statement released on Monday, UBM said it wished to “refocus the website on the provision of news and information to the agricultural community.”

Launched at the Royal Show last year, the website did not start trading until Smithfield, several months later.

This announcement has come as the latest body blow for the e-commerce sector.

Earlier this year globalfarmers announced redundancies, while agrifirst, the French e-commerce site, abandoned its intended April UK launch.

As a news and information service alone, farmgate will work alongside print titles and other marketing products in the agricultural division at UBM.
