Sheep farmers push for carcass standard

SHEEP producers want the government to bring in regulations setting a mandatory standard for carcasses.

Their call follows the introduction of enforcement of the four standard beef carcass specifications.

The Livestock Marketing Alliance (LMA) says this has allowed producers to compare prices more easily.

A majority of sheep are sold on a liveweight basis with farmers paid accordingly.

But an increasing proportion is sold direct to abattoirs where varying dressing standards can lead to a recorded weight variation of 3% to 4% or more, with a knock-on effect for farmers.
