MILLER demand is largely behind the decision to re-instate Soissons winter wheat as a fully recommended variety for the central, south-east and south-west regions, says NIAB.
In a rare appeal success breeder Elsoms Seeds has persuaded NIAB Council to restore the early maturing milling variety from the outclassed category. With a wide range of uses and premiums close to those of Group 1 types, it performs well sown late and accounts for 2.5-3% of the market. "Its end uses swayed the decision," says NIAB cereal specialist Richard Fenwick. *
