South Devons on M&Slist

SOUTH Devon-sired steers from suckler herds are now eligible for Marks and Spencers Select Farm beef scheme which is actively seeking additional suppliers able to meet all the standards.

The addition of the South Devon to the M&S list of approved sires was announced at the Royal Cornwall Show. It now joins the Aberdeen Angus, Charolais, Limousin and Simmental in the scheme.

Leading South Devon breeders Richard Harvey and Gordon Tully said it was good news and would be bound to help demand for their bulls.

And breed society secretary Lesley Lewin said a lot of effort had gone into encouraging M&S to start testing South Devon-sired steer beef. Local breeders and Jaspers – the abattoir in Cornwall which works with M&S on its select beef scheme – had been particularly involved.

"The M&S scientific testing programme took three years and was very thorough,"she added

. It was good to know that it confirmed scientifically what South Devon breeders had always known – that the meat had consistent high quality," she added.
