Spanish olive growers strike over EU production-cut proposals

WORKERS in towns and villages across central and southern Spain went on strike yesterday to support the countrys olive oil farmers who have been told to cut production by the European Union.

Franz Fischler, agriculture commissioner, wants to curb olive oil production in Spain, France, Greece, Italy and Portugal, to stem overproduction and to eradicate fraud.

Spain is the worlds leading olive oil producer and farmers claim the proposals will cause job losses.
