Sparks fly for Holsteins at Trans Atlantic event

By Jeremy Hunt

A "SPARKY" trade was how auctioneers described the Trans Atlantic Breeders sale of Holsteins which produced a top of 11,000gns and an average of £2190 for 54 head.

Alan and Rosemary Shuffle-botham once again acted as hosts at their farm at Broadway, Worcs, where the yearling heifer Skyhigh Ivory Mandel stirred the crowd into paying the days top price.

Consigned by the Carlisle, Cumbria partnership of J and &#42 Shadwick and J G and J C Swainson, the heifer – PIN 95 – is a granddaughter of the noted 13,900kg American brood cow Robthom Ivory Mark.

She is bred out of an Inspiration dam from the heavy milking Robthom Ruby family and was bought by an agent taking bids on the phone from T J Morrison & Sons, who run the Inch herd in Northern Ireland.

The day kicked off on a strong note with a 4200gns bid from Jojan herd owners Jonathon and Janet Corbett, Chepstow, for the 12,200kg Dynasty Blackstar S Primrose 3rd, the first lot in the ring.

She was the dam of last years winner of the Wexham Cup at Crewe and was in-calf to Bellwood. Primrose 3rd was offered to dissolve the Honeypot Partnership.

John and Valerie Barker are expanding their Ridgefield herd at Groby Lodge Estate in Leics.

Their most expensive bid, at 4000gns, was Andrew Bairds Cleevale Storm Joy, a January 1998-bred heifer out of the 9000gns Shoremar Bobby Joe. They partnered her with another January 1998 heifer Avondale Storm Corrie consigned by the Shufflebothams at 3600gns.

The Groby Lodge trio was completed with another 3600gns paid to Peter Padfield for the powerfully bred yearling heifer Hayleys Integrity Gloriette 69th.

Simon Clarke, adding to his Scotchhills herd in Staffs, gave 3800gns for the nine-month-old heifer calf Cleevale Lindy Marq while W Paul, Co Londonderry gave 3700gns for Avondale Farms Canadian import Appleridge Winchester Sue, a yearling heifer bred from the famous Sweet family.
