Speed spraying to tackle blackgrass
Speed spraying to tackle blackgrass
A NEW spraying recommendation, based on using variable pressure (VP) nozzles, has been announced by Syngenta to help cereal growers tackle blackgrass with Hawk (clodinafop-propargyl + trifluralin) more effectively.
The new move allows sprayers to travel faster to help tackle the weed at the ideal timing.
"For maximum control, it is essential to spray blackgrass when it has 1-2 leaves," says the firms application specialist Tom Robinson.
"Previous recommendations supported spraying Hawk at 8-10kph. But modern sprayers increasingly travel faster."
Use of VP nozzles permits spraying up to 12kph – provided there is no turbulence, he explains.
The company hopes this will help growers spray more blackgrass at its most susceptible stage, providing better control.
Spraying at the 1-2 leaf stage rather than the 2-3 can bring an extra 10% control, notes Mr Robinson. *
