Stablising an industry
MILK prices need to rise this autumn to stabilise an industry hit by foot-and-mouth, which has resulted in more than 120,000 dairy cattle being slaughtered, says the NFU.
"The impact of F&M and associated problems like movement restrictions and the suspension of AI in parts of the country have created real uncertainty over milk supplies this autumn and for next year," says NFU deputy president, Tim Bennett. A rise would give producers confidence to invest and help the industry to overcome the structural damage caused by recent poor milk prices. *
