Staff shake-out at Harrison & Hetherington

CARLISLE-BASED auction house Harrison & Hetherington, the UKs biggest, has seen several senior staff resign in quick succession.

David Thomlinson, managing director and a thirty-year veteran of the group, has resigned. Company chairman Robert Weir has also stepped down.

The latest company accounts for the year to May last year show a turnover of £142 million, with a commission rate of £4.38m. The operational profit before tax was £948,000, of which £260,000 was retained.

Mr Thomlinson is chairman of the Livestock Auctioneers Association in England and Wales. His and Mr Weirs departures follows a trend.

Scott Donaldson of Country Auctions at Wooler, Northumberland, was made redundant recently. And earlier this summer, John Swan & Sons laid off three auctioneers.

There is speculation that others will follow once the autumn sales are finished.
