Star-spangled pearl leads the field
THE ALL-American bred, newly-calved heifer Barbican Canuck Pearl led the trade at 4100gns at the 10th annual "Star Quality" sale of Holstein Friesians staged at Portadown, Northern Ireland.
Just two weeks into her first lactation, she is by A Windemere Canuck. Her grand-dam was spotted in the USA by David Heenan, who sent her to Canada for flushing. The result was Barbican Eagle Pearl, dam of the sale topper, which achieved a 3.98% protein in her third note. Canuck Pearl goes to Gaston Wallaces Printshop herd in Co Antrim.
And heading for the same home at 2800gns was Terraglen Prelude Alison, also from the Heenan familys Barbican consignment. This March 1993-bred heifer is out of an Inspiration dam.
In-milk heifers were in strong demand. "The best trade this season," commented Automarts Tom Clarke after the sale.
AVERAGES: In-milk heifers £1403, and young cows and second calvers £1238. (Automart.) *
