Stockpiling semen before restrictions

Stockpiling semen before restrictions

DAIRY producers practising DIY AI should stock up on semen supplies in case foot-and-mouth restrictions are enforced in their area, particularly those following a strict spring calving pattern.

Contact your semen supplier and check the situation with regard to deliveries, advises Pasture to Profit grazing consultant Carol Gibson. "But in case your usual supply chain is disrupted, make sure you have a contingency plan which identifies alternative sources of semen."

Producers in Warks and surrounding areas say they have been unable to receive semen supplies and insemination services from Avoncroft for four weeks because the companys depot is in Bromsgrove, a restricted area. However, Genus has been approached by producers to supply their semen during the crisis.

"For herds following a tight calving pattern, the greatest priority is to get cows in calf rather than concerns about source of semen. Do not risk losing the pattern," says Miss Gibson.

When semen is unavailable and producers are relying on bulls to cover the herd, precautions must be taken to preserve the bulls power and fertility.

"Take on-heat cows to the bull rather than allowing him to run with the herd and take extra care of him, particularly his feet and feed. A healthy, vigorous bull should be able to cope with 40 cows and can be expected to mate successfully two to four times a day."

Bulls may be able to cope with larger numbers of cows on individual days, but not for extended periods. &#42
