STRATEGIC CROP MANAGEMENT
STRATEGIC CROP MANAGEMENT
RECOGNISING that more farmers and farm staff are BASIS and FACTS trained ADAS has developed a new service to provide top-up technical help for farmers who do their own crop walking.
"The aim of the Strategic Crop Management Service is to provide the icing on the cake," says Andy Wells of ADAS Gleadthorpe.
"We provide four half-day visits a year to review key management decisions in the light of new products, latest technological developments and relevant research results. This is backed by regular contact via newsletter and e-mails, and access to ADAS interactive information on the internet."
The cost of the new service depends on the scale of the business. For a 400ha (1000 acre) farm the charge is £3.75/ha (£1.50/ acre), for 800ha (2000 acres) or more it is £2.50/ha (£1/acre).
ADASUPGRADESFERTIPLAN FOREXTRASAVINGS
ADAS has recently updated its popular fertiliser planning service, Fertiplan, to take into account soil nutrient reserves and off-take with the crop.
The service provides field-by-field recommendations for all fertiliser use, to ensure it is matched to crop and field need, so money is not wasted and the environment not put at risk.
"Where there are significant reserves in the soil it is possible to make worthwhile cash savings," points out ADASs Andy Wells. "But it is vital to ensure that crops, particularly high value sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables, are not starved of vital nutrients.
"That is where Fertiplan, which takes into account soil type, its nutrient status, previous fertiliser and organic manure applications, previous cropping and yields, pays off."
Regular soil sampling on a 1:4 or 1:5 yearly frequency with an annual field-by-field recommendation of what to apply costs an average of £2.50 for 200ha (500 acres) over the four to five year period.
