Straw power on song…

EXCAVATION work on what is said to be the worlds largest straw fired power station should be finished by this Christmas, according to fuel supplier Anglian Straw.

When complete the £60m electricity generating plant near Ely, Cambs, will need 200,000t of straw a year, or 6% of East Anglias production, says David Johnson of AS, a subsidiary of operations manager EPR Ely.

The NFFO3 subsidised plant is expected to go on line in September 2000 and run for 20 years providing enough power for 80,000 homes. "Thats twice the number of houses in Cambridge," says Mr Johnson.

Constructed by Taylor Woodrow under contract to FLS Miljo, a Danish firm which has already built five straw fired power stations, the plant should also create 45 long-term jobs.

A residents forum has been set up to help minimise the schemes impact on the local community, he adds.
