Success for livestock register

A SHEPHERDS decision to operate a livestock register to match sellers and buyers has seen over 35,000 sheep traded in its first month of operation.
Daryl Shimwell, who works for Stanton Park Farms in Derbyshires Peak District, set up the register after overseeing lamb sales from the estates 500-ewe flock.
Interest spiralled from initial adverts placed in the farming press, confirming Mr Shimwells suspicion that buyers want stock.
“Buyers are prepared to travel, particularly if they can get the stock they want off one farm,” he says.
Typical values have seen stores sell well against finished market values, at 23-25/head.
The breeding trade has been encouraging too. Smaller Mule gimmer lambs have been worth 25-35/head, with bigger sorts ready for tupping at 35-45/head.
