…suckler challenge

SUCKLER producers are not making the most of good genetics on offer through AI.

Genus resource manager Angela Christison told members of the British Cattle Breeders Club at Cambridge, that the high use of natural service sires meant many suckler herds had missed out on genetic gain.

She suggested improved genetics would benefit suckler producers finishing cattle by reducing calving difficulties, and improving growth rates and carcass values. "When combined these factors could increase margins by £50 compared with the average natural service regime."
