Sugar output collapse threatens India

INDIA sugar production could fall sharply next year unless there is some improvement in prices, reports the Financial Times.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) is warning that cheap imports and a bumper domestic crop could force prices down, tempting farmers away from cane.

India is the worlds second largest producer of sugar.

It is expecting record production of 17.3m tonnes during the 1999-2000 season which begins next month, against 16.7m tonnes in 1998-1999.

Sugar prices have fallen 3% in the current season, and the crops problems have been compounded by imports.
