Sugar producers fight barriers

MOST of the leading sugar producing countries around the world have formed the Global Alliance for Sugar Trade Reform to fight tariffs and quotas.

They are expected to meet ahead of the World Trade Organisation meeting in Seattle next week to agree a common approach to put to trade ministers.

Among their concerns are the low quota for sugar imports into the USA, the lack of access to the European market and high tariffs in Japan.

Sugar producers outside the USA and Europe say consumers in these markets pay up to three times world market rates because of trade barriers. Last week, the European Union tightened measures to enforce tariffs on sugar.
