THE latest stage in the continuing rationalisation of agricultural co-operation in Wales could see the merger of two west Wales supply societies.
Directors of Clynderwen and Cardiganshire Farmers and Carmarthen and Pumsaint Farmers, each of which were formed by the amalgamation of two or more co-ops, will consult their combined membership of 10,000 during the summer. They hope to have a new super co-operative in operation by October.
If terms can be agreed the new business will have a turnover of more than £40m and assets in the region of £8m. Its main trading area will extend from north of Aberystwyth along Cardigan Bay to Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. *
A statement from the boards of both co-ops says unification will provide a more cost-effective operation, increase buying power, and allow the delivery of better value for money to customers.
