Taking tea & going Dutch was great fun
JANE Ridgway, one of the North Cotswold contact leaders, offered to entertain a party of Dutch women who were visiting England.
She and her husband Geoff were to holding a barn dance at Downs Farm, Epwell, on the Friday evening so why not serve tea to the FWC and their visitors on the Thursday afternoon, they thought.
It was arranged to meet at Tysoe church and the vicar, Rev David Knight, very kindly held a short service of thanksgiving for the FWC and made everyone very welcome – as did the organist who played us out to The Archers theme tune!
The Dutch party were thrilled to attend an English country church and to stroll through the lovely Cotswold village before the tea served by members.
Conversation soon got under way in spite of the language barrier and Jane gave an interesting talk, with the help of an interpreter, about her familys farming over the seven years that they have been in the area. They farm 202ha (505 acres) and have an English Friesian herd which was of great interest to the farm women from Friesland.
Gerda Blom, one of the Dutch organisers, thanked everyone for their hospitality and issued an invitation to me to bring a party of FWC members to stay with them next year. If anyone is interested in such a trip please get in touch with me.
