Technical skills not enough to be successful

SOUND business and technical knowledge must go hand in hand if UK potato producers wish to remain competitive.

That was the message from British Potato Council chairman, David Walker.

His comment followed a recent BPC survey which suggested only 41% of growers knew their end markets. Shropshire council member Richard Solari believed the overall figure could be even higher.

"Your soil, your climate, your market aspirations, and your resource limitations, be that people or storage, all interact," said Mr Walker. Markets could not be divorced from the technology to meet their demands, he said

"That is why we are linking the two together and trying to foster the supply chain/whole business approach."
