Tenants lobby Scots Parliamentary hopefuls

PROSPECTIVE members of the Scottish Parliament are to be reminded of the specific difficulties faced by tenant farmers, reports The Herald today.

A group of farmers in the Highlands will write to each candidate, voicing fears that tenant producers have been overlooked in the governments proposals for land reform.

The farmers holdings and incomes are so small that they qualify for support under the means-tested Crofting Counties Agricultural Grants Scheme (GCAGS), but enjoy none of the crofters legal rights.

The tenants want to be covered by the crofters right to buy established by the 1976 Crofting Act which allows crofters to buy their holdings at 15 times the annual rent.
