‘Think ethical on farming’

MORE emphasis should be put on ethical principles when politicians formulate policies affecting farming, claims a think-tank organisation.

The Food Ethics Council warns that UK food and farming systems must be reconstructed on the basis of new guiding principles.

Policymakers are misguided in putting too much of a focus on concepts such as efficiency and global competitiveness, says the council.

This leads to an increasingly unequal industry, which is detrimental to farmers and society as a whole.

A report by the independent body suggests farmers are often pushed into adopting technology or taking decisions because of economic necessity.

“Trivial increases in productivity introduced with the aim of maintaining a competitive edge may produce severe and irreversible effects on farmers viability,” it warns.
