Tim Lang clashes with SCRI on GM food

PROFESSOR Tim Lang, head of the Centre for Food Policy at Thames Valley University, called for a moratorium on genetically modified organisms in farming until the full effects could be evaluated.

His comments on a moratorium to members of the Scottish Society for Crop Research, in Invergowrie, were greeted with hostility.

Dr Jim Duncan head of plant pathology at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) said “we may as well give up” if a moratorium was imposed. Langs response to that was “tough”. He said consumers had not asked for genetically modified crops.

However, Prof Lang was later rendered virtually speechless when Prof Michael Wilson, deputy director of the SCRI asked him how he proposed to feed the millions of extra mouths in the world without GM crops.
