Trade perkier at Crewe sale

COMPARED with last month there was an overall improvement in trade at the Western Holstein Clubs sale at Crewe with 108 newly calved heifers averaging £722.

Senior heifers sold particularly well and four Scottish buyers and a wagonload bought by Lancashire dairy farmer Aubrey Greenhalgh acting for Northern Ireland dairy farmers contributed to the improved average.

Goostrey Fashion 174, a calved heifer by Raider consigned by C R Griffiths and Sons, Middlewich, Cheshire, led the day at 1200gns. She will join M McCleans herd in Co Tyrone.

Gornal Nanette 109, which picked up the reserve championship, earned 1000gns for owners D E Davies and Son, Welshpool. This calved heifer by Etazon Celsius comes from four generations of VG and Excellents and was bought by J E Lloyd, Hereford.

The sales auctioneers, Wright-Manley, also put 225 head of black-and-white stock under the hammer earlier in the week when they dispersed the Anafon herd for the University of Wales, Bangor, following the decision to sell University Farm at Aber, Llanfairfechan.

Moet Zebo Rale A, springing with her second calf to Etazon Lord Lily, led the sale at 1100gns, taken by R G Lloyd, Anglesey.

Averages 46 cows £464, 59 milking heifers £613, 15 served heifers £475 and 44 maiden heifers £247.
