EDUCATION expert Frederick Mallion has won the Royal Smithfield Club Bicentenary Trophy.
He collected the award, given for outstanding contributions to the British meat livestock industry, after the National Festival of Meat in London last weekend.
"I really have enjoyed every moment of my career – and still do," says 81-year-old Fred, whos spent all his working life in the meat trade.
An ex-principal of Smithfield College, hes known industry-wide for his education and training work. "Seeing so many young people come through and make something of themselves was a real pleasure," he says.
And despite the recent tough times, he still sees the meat trade as a good choice for those youngsters now embarking on their careers, 65 years after he did. "Its still a very good business and there is still a very good living to be made in it provided you are prepared to work hard. Its a very satisfying trade.
"The whole industry is looking for good young people who know what they are about."
Fred, whos served on a host of meat and food industry official bodies, is a director and company secretary of the Meat Training Council and a council member of the Association of Meat Inspectors. Hes a past Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers and has been a Council Member of the Royal Smithfield Club since 1973. "Ive got a full diary," he says.
So, maybe its time for a break? Time to put his feet up? "I enjoy what I do too much to stop," he says. "Im going to die with my boots on."
