Tropical fruit growers meet

THE worlds leading tropical fruit producers are meeting in Thailand for what will be the first inter-governmental meeting of tropical fruit producing and consuming nations.

It is being staged under the aegis of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The impact of El Niño, collapsing Asian currencies and increasing competition from relatively new entrants, has driven the need for the meeting.

The gathering is seen as a potential forum for promoting the development of tropical fruits, such as pineapples, mangoes, avocados and papayas, as well as a means of exchanging information.
