UK to tighten up on gene research
THE government plans to tighten up the control of gene research including a rationalisation of the regulatory bodies currently involved.
The Times reports that a government committee, known as Misc 6, is looking at biotechnology and “in particular, issues arising from genetic modification”.
The initiative has been brought about by increasing public concern about research currently taking place, particularly in the aftermath of the BSE crisis and fears over “Frankenstein food”.
The governments main concerns are genetically modified food, cloning and biotechnology.
