THE last auction sale of pedigree livestock has been held at Automart, Portadown in Northern Ireland. The Clarke family who own the site have sold it for development, leaving Ulster livestock breeders without a regular sale venue.

There were suggestions that the provinces main pedigree sales fixtures would move to Balmoral Showground, but that now looks unlikely. Several breed societies have already decided to hold summer and autumn sales at various market venues throughout Ulster.

But Libby Clarke said the closure of the Automart was not the end of the story. Auctioneer Tom Clarke and his team will continue to stage on-farm pedigree sales. &#42
