UN to boost rabbits as food

THE Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has embarked on an ambitious programme to boost global rabbit production.

The FAO believes that rabbits have a “significant potential to improve food security” for various countries around the world.

This is because rabbits can produce up to 40 offspring a year, compared to only 0.8 for cattle and 1.4 for sheep.

Farmed rabbit production is currently 957,000 tons a year, with China accounting for about a third of that.
