Unsure prices for Scottish barley
SCOTLAND is on target to achieve a good barley harvest this year, but a prices are still uncertain, according to a report in The Herald.
Total barley production is expected to reach 1.4 million tonnes, of which 85% to 90% is likely to be in the useable category for the malting trade.
Domestic demand is for a maximum of 800,000 tonnes and there is speculation that the excess will be sold into England.
The continuing strength of the pound militates against sales into Europe.
Ex-farm prices for feed barley are currently at about £67.50/t, which translates to about £85/t for malting barley.
The intervention price is around £73/t.
