US acceptance of GM food
down to ‘better communication’

THE USA appears to be more open in providing information on genetically modified (GM) food than the UK, writes Fordyce Maxwell, in The Scotsman. He offers this as an explanation as to why the concept is more acceptable to US consumers.

He says Monsanto is now trying to make up lost ground with an advertising campaign launched on Saturday in the UK to explain the “benefits” and “safety” of the procedure.

Maxwell says he believes GM organisms are here to stay. He points out the merger of Monsanto with American Home Products will produce a combined group with worldwide sales of about £14 billion. The total output of Scottish farming is less than £2bn.
