US announces massive farm aid
BILLIONS of dollars in aid will be paid to rescue US farmers from a second year of poor grain prices, Dan Glickman, agriculture secretary, has announced.
He told reporters at an impromptu briefing that the administration “are talking about a supplemental package in the billions of dollars range”.
It was looking to a better way of distributing the aid rather than the bonus round of farm subsidies favoured by Republicans.
The Republican-controlled Senate approved $7.65bn in aid in August, as a prelude to a final round of negotiations with the White House.
