US prepares sanctions against EU
THE European Union (EU) told the World Trade Organisation yesterday it could not meet the deadline to lift its ban on the import of hormone-treated beef.
Nigel Gardner, European Commission spokesman, said talks were taking place with the US about compensation.
The EUs decision not to lift the ban could pave the way for the US to impose sanctions on EU exports.
The WTO ruled last year that the EU ban on the import of hormone-treated beef broke international trade rules and gave it until 13 May to comply.
The EU is currently carrying out studies into potential human health problems from consuming the hormones.
