Variable wheat crop

NICK MATTHEWS, of Bartholomews in Chichester is reporting a varied wheat harvest. “With about 50% cut, it is very variable, depending on different areas and conditions.”

Hagberg, protein and specific weight are all within specification so far. “Yields are all over the place, with the weather during the winter. There are some good yields and some terrible yields. Chalk has done better.”

He has not been concerned of quality with recent rains. “Its getting to the stage where it needs to be knocked off. Some areas may be more susceptible to falling quality.”

He estimates 30% of spring barley has been combined. Variable nitrogen is emerging, with high nitrogen appearing with low yields.

“Farmers with poor yields are remaining philosophical as most had expected them.”
