Vegetarian Society slammed for accrediting GM foods
GROUPS opposed to genetically modified crops have attacked the Vegetarian Society for allowing its “V” logo to be used on products containing genetically modified soya.
Money from selling the use of the symbol is an important source of income to the society – generating about 25% of its earnings.
The Vegetarian Society said the symbol was purely a guarantee that food contained no animal ingredients. It was not a guarantee of fair trade, low fat or anything else, it said.
The society said it would not approve genetically modified food containing animal genes.
