Video shows cattle handling risks

THE risks associated with handling cattle are highlighted in a graphic new video produced by the Health and Safety Executive.

Launching Deal with the Danger, at the Royal Highland Show on Thursday, the HSE said 27 people in the past 10 years had been killed in accidents while working with cattle. Many others had been seriously injured.

Linda Williams, HSEs chief inspector of agriculture, said: "We know that whatever farmers do, handling cattle in never going to be 100% safe. But with the right facilities and work practices, they can significantly reduce the risk of being injured."

As well as creating typical accidents, the video examines the factors that can affect the behaviour of cattle and the elements that go to make up a good handling system.

"I hope this video will make people stop and think about how they handle cattle on their farm and about the real costs to their family and business if they were to be injured or, worse, killed," Mrs Williams added. &#42
