View from across the Channel
FRENCH farmers remain opposed to British meat imports even if European Union scientists dismiss objections to the resumption in trade by French scientists.
This is the view put forward in by farmer Jean Marie-Rohart in The Independent.
Mr Rohart took part in demonstrations against British exports in Calais earlier in the week.
Rohart, a senior official with the regional branch of the union that represents French farmers, says he remains unconvinced that British beef offers no risk to consumers.
He contrasts French practice in slaughtering the whole herd when a cow is found with BSE against the British practice of slaughtering the single cow.
Traditional butchers around the Calais area who voice no objection to the import of British beef. Several other newspapers sample public opinion across the Channel.
