THEYVE started appearing. Drive around the countryside and you might well see one.

Yes, bale-built structures have started springing up in response to the launch of the NFU/farmers weekly Straw Sculpture competition.

Creations can be any size or shape – all we ask is that it incorporates the British Farm Standard Tractor Logo banner or poster, is built with safety in mind and is, ideally, visible from a busy road or railway.

Last years event, which proved hugely popular, prompted the building of a great diversity of structures. We had entries shaped as farm animals, people, buildings, machinery – one, even, of a ship.

So why not try having a go at winning this year? Theres a £250 prize for the best one. The five runners-up each get a pair of tickets to AgriVision, RASEs new event on Dec 5-6, at Stoneleigh.

The competition is fun and aims to provide some light-relief for farmers in these testing times. But it also has a serious side – to help send out the Buy British message to as many people as possible by proudly displaying the red tractor logo.

To enter, send a colour photo of your creation to: Straw Sculpture Competition, farmers weekly, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS. The closing date is Oct 12. British Farm Standard banners and logos can be obtained free of charge from your regional NFU office.
