Ware &seed exports up
EXPORTS of both ware and seed potatoes are up despite the strong £. Quality has played a key role in securing a premium price for UK produce.
"We can only compete on quality," says Javier Peralta of exporter Agrolon. The firm has exported about 45,000t of ware and 30,000t of seed in the past year. Contracts to Spain and Portugal have been won at price premiums to French and Dutch competition.
But with supermarkets setting a premium ware price in the UK he is concerned that the 1998 crop will leave little tonnage for export.
