Weather hits Scottish potato growers

THE weather has taken its toll on Scottish potato growers, with more than a third of the 14,000 hectares (34,593 acres) still in the ground.

Heavy rain over the last few days is set to result in the worst October harvest figures for many years.

The worst affected areas in Scotland appear to be the Borders and Fife, with the north-east not far behind.

A similar situation exists across western Europe. Some 20% of the Belgian crop is still in the ground, as is 30% of the crop in the Netherlands.
