Weather proves ‘cruel blow’ to shepherds

BAD weather has been a cruel blow for ewes lambing across the country and struggling hill farmers, according to John Scott, convener of the National Farmers Union of Scotlands hill-farming committee.

Lamb mortality has been higher than usual this year due to the adverse weather. He said the cold snap further justified the unions claim that compensation for permanent and natural disadvantaged areas had to become part of future farm policy.

Without support, it would be impossible to maintain these farms and communities which depend on them, he said.
