Welsh Assembly censures Gwyther

By Robert Davies

WELSH farming minister Christine Gwyther has been censured by a majority of members the Welsh National Assembly.

The vegetarian minister sat grim-faced as the leaders of the three opposition parties condemned Ms Gwythers handling of efforts to establish a calf processing scheme.

They claimed she had misinformed the Assembly about the scale of the problems involved when members voted in favour of the proposed £750,000 scheme.

Ms Gwyther did not speak during the 15-minute debate, but was vigorously defended by Assembly First Secretary Alun Michael.

He claimed that she had battled hard on behalf of Welsh dairy farmers, but the vote went 30 to 27 against her.

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening is expected to confirm that Ms Gwyther retains the confidence of her Labour colleagues and will stay in her job.
