Wheat drilling behind

ONLY a third of winter wheat growers had finished sowing by the middle of this week, though Scottish producers had fared marginally better with about 40% done, according to a poll on the BASF agriCentre web-site.

Nationally the figures show nearly a quarter of first wheat growers had sown less than 25% of their crop. Nearly 40% were in a similar position with second wheats. But progress in East Anglia was about twice as good.

Almost three-quarters of growers in the south-east had finished barley, but only 31% had done so in East Anglia.

One grower reported not having drilled for seven weeks, and another was three weeks behind target.

Nearly 200 growers responded to the poll.
