Wheat is disappointment

WHEAT is a disappointment for William Wardman, who farms and contracts at Redcar near Middlesborough. He expects to finish winter wheat by the weekend, but still has some more spring barley and beans to combine.

“First wheat Claire has yielded 3.5t/acre (8.6t/ha), which is about 1t/acre (2.5t/ha) down on average. There is also a major shortage of straw.” He says the Claire is a good sample and should be biscuit quality.

Spring barley was grown this year as not all the wheat area was drilled. It yielded between 4.3-5t/ha (1.75-2t/acre). “A long time ago when we grew spring barley we used to think 2.5t/acre (6.2t/ha) was a bad harvest.” It should make low grade malting.
