Wheat surprises as harvest draws in

JOJN WILCOX, who farms at Shebdon near Stafford, expects to finish winter wheat today. Yields have been below average, although good considering conditions.

His Claire feed wheat has yielded 7.5t/ha (3t/acre) and has been as low as 14% moisture this week.

“This is not as good as the 3.5t/acre (8.6t/ha) we got last year, but not too bad considering the wet conditions weve had. I was particularly pleased with one field of 25 acres (10ha), which was sown at the end of January.”

He has also combined some neighbours spring barley, which yielded about 5t/ha (2t/acre), “I was shocked at how well this did.”
