WI targets Blair in rural campaign

By FWi staff

THOUSANDS of postcards are set to be sent to Tony Blair, calling on the Prime Minister to put farming at the heart of the governments rural policy.

The campaign to send 10,000 postcards to Downing Street will be launched by the National Federation of Womens Institutes (NFWI) on 6 June.

Lady Caroline Cranbrook, a family farmer from East Suffolk, will help launch the initiative at the Women 2000 Show in London.

The NFWI is Britains largest womens organisation with some quarter of a million members spread across England and Wales.

Later in the year, the organisation will hold a “Buy British, Buy Local” fortnight to encourage its members to support local farmers.

It believes that agriculture and other primary sectors in rural areas should be central to any strategy for creating jobs and community benefits.
