Winfrey case "threat" to free speech


THE Law page in The Times reports on the Oprah Winfrey BSE trial in which Texan cattle ranchers are suing her for comments made about burgers on one of her shows in April 1996.


It says if the cattlemen win their case, ” a dangerous legal lasso” will be put in a spin above the heads of many people who may in future want to exercise freedom of speech.
