Winner not just a pretty face
Winner not just a pretty face
A SCORE of 45 out of 50 possible points from the judges was enough for Philip Jones Holstein cow Cophill Corona 55 to win the Dairy Show 2000 supreme championship.
The cow, which Mr Jones bought from J E Pryce as an in-calf heifer, began her second lactation in July and took the breed championship after winning the junior cow in-milk class. In her first lactation, Corona 55 yielded 11,625kg.
But despite milking exceptionally well, she calved with an 11-month interval and is now giving 55 litres a day. "Shes not just a pretty face," said Mr Jones, who milks 140 cows at Failand, Bristol. But he still plans to sell the cow at his herd reduction sale at the end of November.
Reserve champion position was closely contested, with the judges awarding the Dairy Shorthorn 41 points and the Ayrshire 42. But Barnowl Jerseys junior cow in-milk, Goldeneagles Oasis Victoria, pipped them both with 43 points.
