WTO names farm talks chairman
THE World Trade Organisation has resolved who will chair sensitive agricultural negotiations over the coming year.
Perus Geneva ambassador Jorge Voto-Bernales has been named chairman, reports the Financial Times.
The EU had earlier refused to accept Brazils ambassador Celso Amorim on the grounds that Brazil is a member of the Cairns Group of agricultural exporters.
The 18-strong Cairns Group has lobbied for an end to farm subsidies, making the EU common agricultural policy a prime target.
Peru is not a member of the Cairns Group.
Vice-chairman of the agricultural committee, who will not handle negotiations, is Yoichi Suzuki of Japan.
